Blog

April

Well I had planned to post once a month but that went out the window the moment my laptop died on the 1st of March. I’m hoping to replace it before June rolls around, and if not by then before November. Because there is no way I’m participating in NaNoWriMo while having to write on my phone.

As to my #365challenge stats, I wrote 10,299 words in March and February netted me 10,026. So far In April I have written 5,079. I’m aiming for 14,000 so we will see. If I succeed though by the end of April I will have written 50k. Halfway towards my goal.

As for right now, I’m participating in a 5k walk/run/write challenge run by the #10minutenovelist group on Facebook. The walking part is easy, it’s the writing that’s proving difficult. Hence this blog and a thousand other things that I wouldn’t normally write are happening. LOL. Anything to get the words.

I’ll let you know how I did by the end of the weekend. Fingers crossed.

All Things Valentine’s

January ended on a positive note and netted me an impressive 15,500 words. I had thought that February would be just as impressive, but sadly by Day #2 I was having to rethink my own personal goals and expectations.

I’ve set myself a small one this month. Just 8,000 words. Sounds easy enough right? Wrong. I started off strong on Day #1 but from there things have been slow going. I’m currently 644 words behind target. And it sucks, big time. But life and the weather (surprisingly) have gotten in the way. Perth sweltered through it’s longest heatwave since 1930 last week. Reaching temperatures of over 40 degrees Celcius.

As for yesterday, being Valentine’s Day, the husband and I didn’t celebrate. After almost sixteen years together it’s become just another excuse for presents and when you’ve been together as long as we have present shopping can be tricky.

I did however decide on a whim I wanted to dye my hair copper. It’s currently lightened to a not so appealing caramel colour, but once I’ve dyed over the top of it, it shouldn’t be so bad.

New Years Resolutions

So, it’s January, and one of my New Years Resolutions was to get back into blogging, so I figure now that my writing commitments are out of the way, I can kill two birds with one stone and get this first post out of the way as well.

A lot has happened since I was last active on here. Four months ago, and then again, one year before that. It’s really crazy how time flies, right?

Books four, five and six of the Eldritch Series are almost complete and I’ve pulled down Books one and two, ready to rewrite and edit and I will finish Book three.

Hopefully I can (re) release them before the end of the year, finances pending, along with Even Angels Fall.

It’s a lot and I’ve fallen prey to over commiting before, so I’m going to take it slow and do it in manageable chucks, so we’ll just have to see.

Writing is happening and that’s what counts.

All Things Cosplay, including Book Week

No, I’m not going to a convention but it is Book Week at my kids school. So the husband and I were hashing out last minute costume changes and got onto the subject of all things… Joss Whedon. Yes we’re are fans, fanatics to the point that each one of our children bears the name of a major or minor character featured in the Buffy/Angel universe.

Alexander “Xander”… is after the character Alexander LaVelle Harris

Lilia “Lily”… is after the blonde girl Anne who is actually known by many names, including Chonterelle and Lily)

Caleb… is after the priest in Season 7, named Caleb

Quinn… is not named after a character but an actor. Glenn Quinn played Allen Francis Doyle in Angel Season 1.

And it turned into a what if scenario. What if Mal was a girl. What would her name be? This is what we came up with:

Captain Malcolm Reynolds – Malissa

Jayne – Jamie

Zoe – Zachary

Simon – Simone

Kaylee – Kale

Sheppard Book – First idea was Paige, second was Story and third well it’s still in the works

While it’s not a complete list it is one that’s still in the works. If you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them. 😀

Robin Williams, Depression and Other Personal Struggles

It needs saying. I woke up this morning to the news that Robin Williams was dead. At first I thought it was a hoax, but reading the reports and noting where they came from I quickly realised it was indeed real.

Robin Williams, was dead… and he was only 63.

It saddens me to think that the actor who starred in some of my favourite movies as a child, some of which I’m just rediscovering since news of his death broke, will not go on to star in anymore.

I don’t often speak of my own anxiety and depression, because its not something I like talking about publically. It’s not something that people want to know about.

Fact is, mental illness, and disorders carry with them a stigma that has not yet been completely shaken off, and it doesn’t matter how much society has progressed Depression and Anxiety are still two disorders that people fail to understand.

It’s a little like grief really. Everybody deals with it in different ways. No two people are the same and there’s no right or wrong way to deal with it. What works for one person won’t necessarily work for another, and that is mainly where a lot of the misconceptions spring from. People read something on Depression and Anxiety and immediately think they are an expert. They start offering up advice on ways to cope that won’t necessarily help the person going through it.

Take my Depression and Anxiety. Music is a massive tool that helps me through both. Writing used to be, but I no longer find that productive as my writing becomes darker when I’m Depression and the words don’t come when I’m anxious anyway, so there is no point but to wait out the symptoms and lose myself in music and other seemingly frivolous distractions.

So it is on that note I end this post… and tonight once my children are tucked up in bed for the night I will be sitting down and watching “Dead Poets Society” and following it with “Good Will Hunting” in Tribute.

Nobody could have played Batty Koda better in Ferngully but you Robin. RIP

Short Stories

So this week marks the start of a writers shootout that I am apart of, yet again. Which means its also the start of a six week stint of writing and reviewing short stories… which in itself can be hectic but add in joys of four kids and all that goes with it and trying valiantly to finish the first draft of a novel that’s been in progress for over two years and I’m close to curling up on the floor in a foetal position and staying there… and not getting up.

The Last Six Months…

So… it’s been a busy six months, at least it has in terms of actual writing. I don’t quite know what else happened in my life during those 6 months. LOL. Oh wait… we did go to Queensland for a week around Easter.

But on the writing side of things Dandelions is sitting at just over 61,000 words. Sovereign is somewhere around 25,000 and Even Angels Fall is at 48,000. It’s sequel The Rising Dark is maybe 20,000 words in.

I have a sackful of short stories written and three more will be written in the next six weeks. I am contemplating throwing out a few for publication, but my main priority is getting my novels finished and sent off to my darling beta readers. I think it’s appropriate that there’s only two of them at this stage because I’m not sure when Dandelions will be finished.

I have a few swag items in the works too currently and I know what I’m writing for NaNoWriMo… which is a big thing for me… I even have the title all worked out. But that and the cover are under wraps for now.

Admittedly, I don’t do this much anymore. There used to be a time – in my teens – where I’d create character profiles for every character.

So I figured while the writing is slow I’d do so for the main characters of Dandelions.

First up… Scarlett.

Apologies

Ugh! I don’t know what’s up with the first quarter of 2014. I’ve been neglecting this blog something awful. So I apologize. I’m still writing, but getting nowhere, at least that’s what it feels like. Got to love it when a story will run in your head but you just can’t seem to get it down without it wanting to take on some new direction. That’s Dandelions right now. Sovereign just has me stumped, again, at the moment. And, Even Angels Fallis just nightmarish. Needless to say I do hope to have all three completed by the end of the year. We’ll see how that goes.

Disappearing

I swore I wasn’t going to let this blog become inactive, and what happens? I do just that. Sorry guys.

Anyway I’m back… with a few changes on the way as well. Namely my author name. I’m switching to a pen name. Purely because my name has always felt like it never fit me, moreso since I married. The in-laws and I… we’re not a good fit.

So stay tuned.

Day #1 to #4 of NaNoWriMo 2013

So, I had all these good intentions to update my NaNoWriMo progress on a daily basis but, it’s not going to happen, sadly.

Day #1 : 1,735 words – I stumbled early. Yeah, I know you’re looking at me like I’m crazy, because I reached the required amount of words, but there just wasn’t any desire within me to actually write my chosen story. So, I began playing around with another.

Day #2 : 2,297 words – See what I said about stumbling? Well it continued. Also had a Halloween party to attend. Time was just not on my side.

Day #3 : 5,126 – Yes, I got to sit at my computer writing for several solid hours and catch up.

Day #4 : Well it’s not over yet and I’ve written… all of 292 words. Granted, I have rescued the lounge room from the mountains that were four kids clothing piles, and put them away, while doing a very quick cull of clothes that don’t fit anymore. 1500 words is totally doable between now and midnight.

So, just to clarify my total word count currently sits at : 5,418. The totals I am sharing are according to each days progress. By Day #30 I should be at or near 50,000.
