Character Profiles : Scarlett Quinn

Admittedly, I don’t do this much anymore. There used to be a time – in my teens – where I’d create character profiles for every character.

So I figured while the writing is slow I’d do so for the main characters of Dandelions.

First up… Scarlett.

Apologies

Ugh! I don’t know what’s up with the first quarter of 2014. I’ve been neglecting this blog something awful. So I apologize. I’m still writing, but getting nowhere, at least that’s what it feels like. Got to love it when a story will run in your head but you just can’t seem to get it down without it wanting to take on some new direction. That’s Dandelions right now. Sovereign just has me stumped, again, at the moment. And, Even Angels Fallis just nightmarish. Needless to say I do hope to have all three completed by the end of the year. We’ll see how that goes.

Disappearing

I swore I wasn’t going to let this blog become inactive, and what happens? I do just that. Sorry guys.

Anyway I’m back… with a few changes on the way as well. Namely my author name. I’m switching to a pen name. Purely because my name has always felt like it never fit me, moreso since I married. The in-laws and I… we’re not a good fit.

So stay tuned.

Day #1 to #4 of NaNoWriMo 2013

So, I had all these good intentions to update my NaNoWriMo progress on a daily basis but, it’s not going to happen, sadly.

Day #1 : 1,735 words – I stumbled early. Yeah, I know you’re looking at me like I’m crazy, because I reached the required amount of words, but there just wasn’t any desire within me to actually write my chosen story. So, I began playing around with another.

Day #2 : 2,297 words – See what I said about stumbling? Well it continued. Also had a Halloween party to attend. Time was just not on my side.

Day #3 : 5,126 – Yes, I got to sit at my computer writing for several solid hours and catch up.

Day #4 : Well it’s not over yet and I’ve written… all of 292 words. Granted, I have rescued the lounge room from the mountains that were four kids clothing piles, and put them away, while doing a very quick cull of clothes that don’t fit anymore. 1500 words is totally doable between now and midnight.

So, just to clarify my total word count currently sits at : 5,418. The totals I am sharing are according to each days progress. By Day #30 I should be at or near 50,000.

6 Days…

6 days left until NaNoWriMo and I’m once again having doubts. Not about the story per se but which story. You see I have so many unfinished WIPs on the go that it’s driving me a little crazy.

Somebody please put me out of my misery.

It would be interesting to write EQUINOX given the new prologue I have stashed away. But Morgan le Fay is such a fun character to write. If I was crazy enough I could write two novels at once, but 100k is just pushing it.

*sigh*

10 Days…

So, there’s 10 days remaining before the start of NaNoWriMo and as I work on another project I find myself stumbling across something not at all foreign to me, given that my own name Stacey was once a boys name.

But honestly people. Are we that far gone that Rhett has crossed the line from a boys name to a girls name? I mean sure there was a time that I considered naming my daughter Reese after her father but my husband never went for it. He also shot down any and all welsh names and I didn’t like to pass on my own middle name so I passed on my mothers… Faye, having dropped the y.

Names and their trends, I suspect there may come a time when we come full circle and perhaps stick to gender appropriate names.

12 Days…

So there’s 12 days left. Well 11 days and twenty minutes but anyway.
I’m planning mostly in my head at the moment I will be printing out my short story and other bits and pieces later because it’s likely part of my novel will be written on my iPhone. I need to invest some money in a keyboard, I think. I haven’t one finger typed since primary school and it’s annoying to say the least.
Meanwhile, if any of you are doing NaNoWriMo and want to friend me on the forums I’m Rhiannon Brid over there. I took the username from two Celtic Goddesses associated with writing, creativity and inspiration.

13 Days…

So, it’s 13 days out from NaNoWriMo and I’ve realised one thing: I have a horrible track record when it comes to blogging.
To be completely fair though my kids have gotten sick twice since I last wrote a blog.
Illnesses aside I have figured out the jist of my novel. I know the opening scene and I know the ending – more or less.

25 Days…

So much for good intentions. I got sick and spent all day yesterday on the couch, watching re-runs of Charmed, in between naps. I’m just barely eating, too scared my stomach is going to rebel.

BUT… I did manage to figure out this years NaNo Novel. I’ve been struggling somewhat. I have subsequently decided to revisit an idea that sprung to life last November. I’m going to write Morgan’s story. It’s been on the back burner for 12 months, and it’s one that needs to be finished.

For those who might want a sneak preview, my short story Morrighan is only a small glimpse into Morgan’s story.

You can purchase the Quests, Curses and Vengeance Anthology in both Paperback and Kindle through Amazon and Martinus Publishing.

29 Days…

Okay, so in my bid to get organized for NaNoWriMo, I’ve decided you’ll be heaving from me each and every day during the month of November. I know, you’re already sick of me aren’t you? Well, tough. 😀

Okay so, for those of you who don’t know my NaNoWriMo adventure began in 2005. I was 22 and seven months pregnant with my first son. I wrote 50k on a novel I called Red Rose Castle. And subsequently every NaNo novel since has had Rose imbedded somewhere within.

So this year, I thought I had the perfect title, but it’s no longer fitting, even though I love the cover art, I threw together. The problem with not knowing what your going to write about is that you can’t really slap on a title until you figure it out.

And so far, all I have is the genre. Paranormal Romance. I’m toying with a few very vague ideas right now. I have a few characters that are dying for attention. I guess we’ll see soon enough.

Countdown to NaNoWriMo

Okay, so it’s officially the 1st of October. Which means there are precisely 31 days until the start of NaNoWriMo. (that’s National Novel Writing Month, for those not in the know)

I’ve been participating since November 2005. During which time I’ve gotten married, had four children, been subjected to my mum passing away and moved five times. In fact now that my youngest child is 3, it feels kind of weird to be doing NaNo without that kind of crazy child filled drama in which to fit writing around.

I’ve only lost once, in 2008, the year my mum died and I plan to continue to keep up my winning streak this year. 50,000 words in 30 days. BRING IT ON!

Characters and their Names

You know, their kind of important. Apparently werewolves become tricky to name the more stories you write. As this story may eventually tie into my Zooey ‘verse it’s probably better to play it safe and not reuse character names. Lest I have another Zachary/Zackery/Zack situation on my hands. What can I say, I like the name Zac.

So with that out of the way. I’m going with Adrian. Maybe Taylor.

Suffice to say, there will not be a sequel in Rose’s future. Well, there better not be. I’m not sure yet, but she may have a sister.

The Thing About Vampires

So, Vampires in fiction. It seems they are either loved to bits or hated with some kind of fiery passion better left alone.

For me though. Well I fell in love with Anne Rice in High School. Claudia’s story was just sad and I found myself relating to Jesse a little too much. All in all there’s a reason most of her books line almost an entire shelf in my bookcase. Joss Whedon is another that springs to mind who kept to the true Vampire mythology. Sure, Spike got around in the daytime but not without smoke or the occasional lit himself on fire moment.

I don’t personally write Vampires. They show up infrequently in my writing. And there’s a reason. It’s just too impractical to not get around during the day. Sure you could go the House of Night Series route and hold classes at night, have none of the characters swear and get your books banned in high schools across America. I shouldn’t poke fun. I am a fan of PC Cast, I just think she shouldn’t of collaborated with her daughter.

So it begs the question: How do you get around the sunlight will burn you dilemma? Well perhaps you don’t, you definitely shouldn’t have them sparkle. And Angel blood is a rather curious idea but all in all I think Vampires need to just stay in the shadows. Otherwise there is no mystery. They are just another bunch of long lived humanoids with annoying personality traits. And let’s face it, the fey have that covered.
